Veterans Benefits That May Help Pay for Senior Care in Florida

Some veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA benefits that help fund assisted living or in-home care. This page provides general educational information. We refer families to accredited VA benefits specialists at no charge.

VA Aid & Attendance

The Primary VA Benefit for Long-Term Care

VA Aid & Attendance is an enhanced pension benefit that provides monthly tax-free payments to eligible wartime veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily living activities. It is one of the most underused VA benefits available.

The benefit can be used toward the cost of assisted living, memory care, in-home care, or adult day programs. It does not require combat service โ€” only wartime service during a recognized period.

Thousands of eligible Florida veterans and surviving spouses never claim this benefit. If your loved one served during wartime and now needs care assistance, we strongly encourage reaching out to an accredited VA benefits specialist to evaluate eligibility. We make this referral at no cost to your family.

General Eligibility Requirements

  • Veteran must have served at least 90 days of active duty (veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980 generally must have served 24 months or the full period ordered โ€” confirm with a VSO or VA-accredited attorney)
  • At least one day of active duty during a VA-recognized wartime period โ€” WWII, Korean Conflict, Vietnam Era, or Gulf War (August 2, 1990 to present). You do not need to have served in a combat zone. If you served after 1990, consult a VA-accredited attorney to confirm your eligibility period.
  • Discharge under conditions other than dishonorable
  • Need for assistance with activities of daily living (or other qualifying conditions)
  • Meet the VA's income and net worth requirements (limits change annually โ€” consult an accredited VA attorney for current figures)
  • Surviving spouses of eligible veterans also qualify โ€” there is no age requirement for surviving spouses, even if the veteran would have been under 65

Eligibility is determined by the VA based on individual circumstances. These are general guidelines only โ€” consult an accredited VA benefits attorney or Veterans Service Organization (VSO) for evaluation of your specific situation.

Contact a VSO or VA-accredited attorney to confirm eligibility for your specific service dates.
Yes โ€” there is no age requirement for surviving spouses of eligible veterans. A surviving spouse of any age may apply if they meet the other eligibility requirements. This is an important point that many families are not aware of. Consult an accredited VA benefits specialist to evaluate your specific situation.
